Common Tire Check Procedures and Repairs

Tire Pressure Check

Steps:

  1. Remove valve cap from tire
  2. Use calibrated pressure gauge to check current PSI
  3. Compare reading to vehicle's recommended PSI (found on driver's door jamb)
  4. Add or release air as needed
  5. Recheck pressure to confirm proper level
  6. Replace valve cap

Tire Rotation

Steps:

  1. Loosen lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
  2. Safely lift vehicle using proper jack points
  3. Place jack stands for safety
  4. Remove wheels
  5. Rotate according to vehicle-specific pattern (typically front-to-back or cross-pattern)
  6. Reinstall wheels
  7. Lower vehicle
  8. Torque lug nuts to manufacturer specifications

Tire Balance

Steps:

  1. Remove wheel from vehicle
  2. Clean wheel and tire thoroughly
  3. Mount on balancing machine
  4. Run spin test to determine imbalance points
  5. Add appropriate weights to counterbalance
  6. Retest to confirm proper balance
  7. Reinstall wheel on vehicle

Tire Alignment

Steps:

  1. Perform initial inspection of steering and suspension components
  2. Mount alignment sensors/targets to wheels
  3. Take initial measurements of current alignment angles
  4. Adjust camber, caster, and toe angles as needed
  5. Ensure steering wheel is centered
  6. Perform road test to verify proper alignment

Flat Tire Repair

Steps:

  1. Locate puncture site
  2. Remove tire from wheel
  3. Inspect damage to determine if repairable
  4. Clean and prepare puncture area
  5. Apply patch-plug combination from inside tire
  6. Seal repair area
  7. Remount tire on wheel
  8. Balance wheel assembly
  9. Inflate to proper pressure
  10. Test for leaks

Tread Depth Check

Steps:

  1. Clean tire tread area
  2. Use tread depth gauge in multiple locations across tire
  3. Check for uneven wear patterns
  4. Document measurements
  5. Compare to minimum safe tread depth (2/32 inch)
  6. Recommend replacement if necessary

Note: All procedures should be performed by qualified technicians using proper safety equipment and following manufacturer specifications.

Understanding Tire Checks

Visual Tire Inspection
A thorough visual examination of all four tires to check for obvious signs of damage, unusual wear patterns, bulges, cuts, or embedded objects. This inspection helps identify potential safety hazards and maintenance needs before they become serious problems.

Tire Pressure Check
Measuring the air pressure in each tire using a calibrated pressure gauge and comparing it to the manufacturer's recommended PSI levels. Proper tire pressure is crucial for optimal vehicle performance, fuel efficiency, and tire longevity.

Tire Tread Depth Measurement
Using specialized tools to measure the remaining tread depth on each tire. This check ensures tires meet legal requirements and maintain proper traction for safe driving conditions. The standard minimum tread depth is 2/32 of an inch (1.6mm).

Tire Rotation Check
Assessing whether tire rotation is needed based on wear patterns and mileage. Regular rotation helps ensure even tire wear, extending tire life and maintaining optimal vehicle handling.

Tire Balance Check
Evaluating whether tires need rebalancing by checking for vibrations and uneven wear patterns. Proper tire balance is essential for a smooth ride and preventing premature tire wear.

Wheel Alignment Check
Examining tire wear patterns and vehicle handling characteristics to determine if wheel alignment service is needed. Proper alignment helps prevent uneven tire wear and ensures optimal vehicle control.

Valve Stem Inspection
Checking the condition of valve stems and caps to ensure they're properly sealing and preventing air leaks. This often-overlooked component is crucial for maintaining proper tire pressure.

Spare Tire Check
Inspecting the spare tire's condition and pressure to ensure it's ready for use in case of an emergency. This includes checking the spare tire's mounting hardware and accessibility.
