Brake drums are the surface that brake shoes press against to create braking force. Like all components these parts wear out over time. During normal braking use, the inside of the drum is slowly worn down. In the event of sticking brakes or leaking wheel cylinders, the damage can be more severe and occur much quicker.
Typically drums are replaced at the same time as brake shoes and their related hardware.
