Brake Drums

Why would I need a Brake Drum Replacement?

A vehicles brake system consists of wearable and non-wearable parts. Brake pads, brake shoes, brake drums and brake rotors are all designed to wear out. Over the general use of your vehicle you will need to replace these wearable components. Keeping your vehicles braking system function properly is important to your safety.

How do I know I need a Brake Drum Replacement?

Ideally any brake drum machining or replacement that is needed, is done at the same time as a brake shoe replacement. This may not always be the case. When your brake drums need replacement you will typically experience the following symptoms:

  • Increased pedal travel
  • Increased stopping distance
  • Pulsating brake pedal when apply brakes
  • Metallic scraping of squealing noises
  • Lower brake pedal

You do not want to ignore these brake drum symptoms. If you do it could result in additional damaged parts and a significantly more expense repair.

What are brake drums?

While they are not as common as they once were, drum brakes are still used, on rear of some passenger vehicles. Brake drums are a major component in braking system. The brake drum is made of a cast iron. Inside the brake drum are brake shoes, wheel cylinders, springs and an adjustment mechanism. When you press the brake pedal, Hydraulic Brake Fluid is forced through brake lines and hoses, by the master cylinder. This fluid pushes the wheel cylinders outwards and apply force the surface of the drum, slowing or stopping your vehicle. When you release the brake pedal, the springs pull the brake shoes away from the brake drum.

How much will it cost?

The typical cost for the testing and brake drum replacement is between $170-$320 for parts and labor. This price range is averaged across all passenger vehicles. The actual cost depends on your specific make, model and year. Depending on your specific vehicle, this cost may be lower or higher. This cost estimate is for the specific repair listed and doesn’t include additional, related items that may require repair.

What is included:

  • Replacement of drums
  • Inspection of related components.
  • Replacement of brake shoes if needed
  • Replacement of brake hardware if needed.

It is highly recommended that brake drum replacement be done in pairs
