A general electrical fault has been detected in the circuit for knock sensor 4 on bank 2.

Definition

On engines equipped with four knock sensors — typically large V8s and V12s — sensor 4 monitors part of bank 2, and the PCM continuously checks its circuit for a plausible signal and correct bias voltage. P033A sets when the PCM detects an open, short, or implausible condition it cannot classify more specifically. Knock control for the affected cylinders is disabled and the PCM defaults to retarded timing, so the MIL illuminates, performance and fuel economy drop slightly, and real detonation goes undetected under load.

Common causes

  • Failed knock sensor (internal open or short)
  • Damaged or chafed harness between the sensor and PCM
  • Corroded, oil-soaked, or backed-out connector terminals
  • Sensor loose on its boss or mounting surface corroded
  • PCM knock-sense input fault (rare)

  • Replacing the wrong sensor — sensor numbering and valley locations vary by engine
  • Replacing all knock sensors when a single connector is corroded
  • Replacing the PCM
  • Attributing the code to fuel quality

Troubleshooting steps

  1. 1.Locate sensor 4 in service information

    On many V-engines the rear/valley sensors require intake manifold removal, so confirm the exact position before ordering parts.

  2. 2.Inspect wiring and connectors

    Check the sensor pigtail and valley harness for oil saturation, coolant intrusion, and rodent damage, and verify terminal tension.

  3. 3.Measure sensor and circuit resistance

    Compare sensor resistance to spec (commonly ~100 kΩ on resistor-type sensors) and verify harness continuity with no short to ground or power.

  4. 4.Verify mounting condition and torque

    Clean the mounting boss and torque the sensor to the published value (typically 15-25 Nm); corrosion under the sensor attenuates its output.

  5. 5.Scope the output while tapping the block

    A light tap near the sensor at idle should produce a clear AC burst; no response through verified wiring condemns the sensor.

  6. 6.Clear and confirm

    Run the engine at the freeze-frame load and confirm the code stays cleared.
