2.Watch field duty cycle on the scan tool
Compare commanded/desired generator field duty against actual while loading the system with headlights and blower; a fixed 0% or 100% with load changes indicates a circuit or regulator fault.
3.Inspect wiring and connectors
Trace the F-circuit wire for chafe points near the engine harness and check the alternator connector for corrosion or terminals pushed out of the shell.
4.Test the field circuit
With the connector unplugged, check the field wire for continuity to the PCM and for shorts to ground/power; measure field winding resistance at the alternator against spec (typically a few ohms).
5.Replace the alternator if circuits test good
An intact circuit with a dead field response means the alternator's field winding, brushes, or regulator have failed; bench-test to confirm before installation.
