P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction
A generic transmission code indicating the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has set one or more codes of its own. P0700 itself does not describe the specific fault.
Definition
P0700 is an informational code that tells the PCM (and you) that the TCM has a stored DTC. To diagnose, read the TCM-specific codes (which may require a bidirectional scan tool capable of reading transmission codes, not just generic OBD2 codes).
Common causes
- Any internal TCM-stored fault
- Transmission solenoid failure
- Speed sensor (input or output) failure
- Low transmission fluid or burnt fluid
- Internal mechanical transmission failure
Common misdiagnoses
- Treating P0700 as the actual fault — it's a pointer, not a diagnosis. Always read the TCM sub-codes.
Troubleshooting steps
-
1. Read TCM-specific codes
Use a scan tool capable of reading transmission module codes. These will be the actionable codes (P07xx, P08xx, P09xx).
-
2. Check transmission fluid
Verify level and condition. Burnt-smelling or dark fluid indicates internal wear.
-
3. Diagnose per sub-code
Follow the diagnostic procedure for each TCM-specific code returned.
