Definition

On diesels that inject fuel into the exhaust stream to raise temperature for diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration, the PCM opens a fuel supply control (doser shutoff) valve and verifies the response with the aftertreatment fuel pressure sensor. P20DD sets when the valve is commanded open but pressure and flow feedback indicate it never opened. Active regenerations fail to complete, soot load in the DPF climbs, and the truck will eventually enter a reduced-power derate; the MIL illuminates and the vehicle will fail an emissions inspection.

Common causes

  • Fuel supply control valve seized closed from fuel coking or internal failure
  • Open or shorted wiring to the supply control valve solenoid
  • Plugged aftertreatment fuel supply line, filter, or inlet screen
  • Corroded or backed-out terminals at the valve connector
  • Faulty aftertreatment fuel pressure sensor reporting no pressure rise
  • PCM driver circuit failure (rare)

Common misdiagnoses

  • HC doser injector replaced when the upstream supply valve is the failure
  • DPF replaced or sent for cleaning without fixing the failed-regen root cause
  • Aftertreatment fuel pressure sensor replaced without verifying actual pressure
  • Lift/transfer fuel pump replaced when supply to the rest of the engine is normal

Troubleshooting steps

  1. 1.Record freeze frame and related codes

    Note soot load percentage and any companion doser or pressure sensor codes before clearing anything.

  2. 2.Command the supply valve with a scan tool

    Use bidirectional controls to open the valve while watching the aftertreatment fuel pressure PID; pressure should rise promptly when commanded.

  3. 3.Check valve power, ground, and coil resistance

    Verify battery or switched voltage at the connector and compare solenoid resistance to spec (typically single-digit to low tens of ohms).

  4. 4.Verify actual fuel pressure with a gauge

    Tee a mechanical gauge into the aftertreatment fuel line to separate a stuck valve from a lying pressure sensor.

  5. 5.Inspect the supply line and screen for coking

    Remove the line at the valve and doser and look for varnish or carbon restriction; blow through with shop air to confirm flow.

  6. 6.Replace the valve and confirm with a forced regen

    After repair, run a stationary regeneration and verify DPF outlet temperature reaches target (typically 550-650 C).
