P2296Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Control Circuit High

The control circuit voltage for fuel pressure regulator 2 is stuck higher than expected, typically from a short to battery voltage or an open ground path.

Definition

The PCM pulses fuel pressure regulator 2 — usually the rail-mounted pressure control valve — and monitors circuit voltage against expected values for each drive state. This code sets when the circuit reads high when it should be pulled low, pointing to a short to voltage, an open in the controlled side of the circuit, or a failed PCM driver. The PCM loses fine control of rail pressure relief, which can cause unstable rail pressure, rough running or reduced power, companion pressure codes, and an illuminated MIL.

Common causes

  • Control wire shorted to battery or ignition voltage in the harness
  • Open circuit downstream of the monitoring point (broken wire or terminal)
  • Corroded connector terminal creating high resistance in the drive path
  • Water intrusion bridging power into the connector
  • Failed driver stage inside the PCM

Common misdiagnoses

  • Rail pressure control valve replaced when the harness is shorted to voltage
  • Fuel rail pressure sensor replaced for a regulator circuit code
  • High-pressure pump replaced for a purely electrical fault
  • PCM replaced before wiring is verified

Troubleshooting steps

  1. 1.Inspect the connector and wiring visually

Look for melted insulation, water intrusion, or repairs where a power wire could contact the regulator control circuit.

  2. 2.Check for short to voltage

With the PCM and valve disconnected and key on, measure the control wire for battery voltage — any reading confirms a short to power.

  3. 3.Verify circuit continuity

Measure end-to-end resistance of each circuit wire from the valve connector to the PCM terminal; more than about 1 ohm indicates a poor connection.

  4. 4.Test the solenoid

Confirm coil resistance is within spec so a failed valve is not returned to service after the wiring repair.

  5. 5.Scope the drive signal and confirm the fix

Back-probe the circuit running, confirm a clean duty-cycle waveform, then clear codes and road test.
