The PCM has detected a general electrical fault in the engine oil quality sensor circuit.

Definition

Some engines—particularly diesels and European designs with condition-based service intervals—use an oil quality/condition sensor that measures properties such as permittivity, viscosity, temperature, and level to judge oil degradation. P252A sets when that sensor's circuit is open, shorted, or sending no valid data, so the module can no longer evaluate oil condition. There are no driveability symptoms, but oil-life calculation and low-quality warnings are disabled, and a service or warning message may display; the underlying maintenance-minder function silently reverts to a fixed schedule or stops working.

Common causes

  • Failed oil quality/condition sensor (most common)
  • Wiring or connector damage on the pan-mounted sensor harness
  • Oil intrusion or corrosion in the sensor connector
  • Open power or ground feed to the sensor
  • Data-line fault on sensors that communicate over a LIN/serial link
  • Faulty module input (rare)

Common misdiagnoses

  • Oil level sensor replaced when the vehicle uses a separate quality sensor
  • Unnecessary oil and filter changes performed to clear the code
  • Oil pressure switch replaced for a condition-sensor circuit fault
  • PCM replaced before checking sensor power and ground

Troubleshooting steps

  1. 1.Confirm oil level and condition

    Check that the correct oil grade is at the proper level and not visibly contaminated before condemning electronics.

  2. 2.Scan for supporting data

    View the oil quality/temperature/level PIDs; readings frozen, missing, or at default values indicate the sensor isn't communicating.

  3. 3.Inspect the sensor connector

    Look for oil wicking into the terminals, corrosion, or damage where the connector hangs below the pan.

  4. 4.Verify power, ground, and signal

    Confirm battery or reference voltage on the feed terminal, under 0.1 V drop on ground, and check the signal/LIN line for activity per the wiring diagram.

  5. 5.Replace the sensor and relearn

    If circuits test good, replace the oil condition sensor (usually with the oil drained), then perform any oil-quality reset or relearn procedure the manufacturer specifies.
