The engine oil quality sensor is returning a signal voltage above its normal operating range, indicating an electrical fault in the sensor circuit.

Definition

The PCM monitors the oil quality/condition sensor, which typically sits in the oil pan and reports oil condition (and often level and temperature) by measuring the oil's dielectric and viscosity properties. P252D sets when the circuit reading is pegged above the maximum expected value, usually from an open circuit or a short to voltage. With the fault present, oil-life calculation and oil condition/level displays default or become unavailable, and the MIL or a maintenance warning may illuminate; the engine itself usually runs normally.

Common causes

  • Failed engine oil quality sensor
  • Open circuit in the sensor signal or ground wire
  • Signal wire shorted to battery or reference voltage
  • Corroded or oil-contaminated sensor connector (oil wicking into the harness is common on pan-mounted sensors)
  • Poor sensor ground at the oil pan or chassis
  • PCM driver or reference-voltage fault (rare)

Common misdiagnoses

  • Changing the engine oil when the fault is electrical, not oil condition
  • Replacing the oil pressure sensor/sender, which is a separate circuit
  • Replacing the oil pump
  • Replacing the PCM before checking wiring and connectors

Troubleshooting steps

  1. 1.Read codes and freeze frame

    Note whether the code is current or history and whether companions like P252A-P252C or oil level codes are also stored.

  2. 2.Inspect the sensor connector

    Unplug the pan-mounted sensor and look for engine oil inside the connector or wicked up the harness — a very common failure that corrupts the signal.

  3. 3.Verify power, ground, and signal

    With key on, confirm supply voltage (5V or battery voltage per the wiring diagram) and a good ground at the connector; on LIN/single-wire sensors verify bus activity on the data line.

  4. 4.Check for a short to voltage

    With the sensor unplugged and key on, the signal wire should not read near battery voltage on a conventional analog circuit — if it does, find the harness short.

  5. 5.Test wiring continuity to the PCM

    With battery disconnected, ohm each circuit end to end; more than about 1 ohm or an open indicates harness damage.

  6. 6.Replace the sensor if the circuit checks good

    If wiring, supply, and ground all pass, install a new oil quality sensor, clear the code, and confirm live oil-condition data is plausible.
