P2541Low Pressure Fuel System Sensor Circuit Low

The low-pressure fuel system sensor signal is stuck below its normal voltage range, usually from a shorted-to-ground circuit or failed sensor.

Definition

The PCM watches the supply-side fuel pressure sensor between the tank/lift pump and the high-pressure pump, and sets P2541 when the signal voltage drops below the calibrated minimum (typically under about 0.25V), which is electrically impossible in normal operation. Because the PCM loses trustworthy supply-pressure feedback, it illuminates the MIL and on many diesels commands reduced power or a fixed lift-pump duty cycle. Symptoms range from none to long cranking, low-power complaints, or false low-fuel-pressure warnings.

Common causes

  • Signal wire shorted to ground
  • Failed fuel pressure sensor with internally shorted output
  • Open 5-volt reference circuit to the sensor
  • Corroded or fuel-soaked connector terminals
  • Chafed harness grounding against the frame, engine, or fuel lines
  • PCM fault (rare)

Common misdiagnoses

  • Replacing the lift pump for what is an electrical signal fault
  • Replacing the fuel filter repeatedly
  • Replacing the fuel rail (high-side) pressure sensor
  • Replacing the PCM before checking for a harness short

Troubleshooting steps

  1. 1.Confirm the fault on live data

    Key on: a pressure PID pegged at zero or a voltage PID under 0.2V while the system should show pressure confirms circuit-low.

  2. 2.Unplug the sensor and re-check

    If the PCM data switches to circuit-high/open with the sensor disconnected, the wiring is intact and the sensor itself is shorted — replace it.

  3. 3.Verify the 5V reference

    Measure 4.9-5.1V at the connector reference terminal; a collapsed reference points to a shorted sensor on that circuit (this one or another sharing the reference).

  4. 4.Check the signal wire for a short to ground

    With the sensor and PCM connectors disconnected, resistance from signal wire to chassis ground should be over 10k ohms; near 0 ohms means a harness short.

  5. 5.Repair or replace and verify

    After the repair, clear codes and confirm the sensor tracks an external gauge through key-on prime and running conditions.
