Voltage on the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid control circuit is lower than the control module expects.

Definition

The TCM/PCM controls TCC apply through a solenoid and continuously compares the control circuit's feedback voltage to the commanded state; P2769 sets when the circuit reads low, typically from a short to ground or a shorted solenoid winding. Symptoms depend on the failure mode: the TCC may never apply (higher RPM on the highway, reduced fuel economy, rising transmission temperatures) or may apply harshly, and some vehicles disable TCC operation entirely and illuminate the MIL. This code is electrical, so it usually points to the circuit rather than the torque converter itself.

Common causes

  • TCC solenoid winding shorted or resistance out of specification
  • Control circuit wiring shorted to ground
  • Fluid intrusion or corrosion at the transmission pass-through connector
  • Chafed internal transmission harness
  • Failed TCM driver circuit (rare)

  • Torque converter replaced for an electrical circuit fault
  • Transmission overhauled when only the solenoid or harness was bad
  • TCC shudder blamed on fluid when the circuit code was the real issue
  • TCM replaced without measuring circuit resistance

Troubleshooting steps

  1. 1.Pull codes and freeze frame

    Note when the code sets (immediately at key-on versus only during commanded TCC apply), which separates a hard short from a load-dependent fault.

  2. 2.Measure TCC solenoid circuit resistance

    At the transmission case connector, measure the solenoid circuit against the service spec (commonly around 10-25 ohms); a near-zero reading indicates a shorted winding.

  3. 3.Check the control wire for a short to ground

    With connectors disconnected at both ends, verify the control circuit is not shorted to ground or to adjacent circuits.

  4. 4.Inspect the pass-through connector

    Look for transmission fluid wicking up the harness into the connector and for spread or corroded terminals.

  5. 5.Command the solenoid and road test

    Use bidirectional control to apply the TCC solenoid while monitoring current/voltage, then road test watching the TCC slip PID, which should drop near 0 RPM when locked.
