Definition

Vehicles with active grille shutters use a small module/actuator on the data bus to open and close shutter vanes, reducing aerodynamic drag and speeding engine warm-up. U0284 sets when expected messages from that module stop arriving on the network, and the shutters typically default to the open (fail-safe) position. Symptoms are usually limited to a warning message or MIL and slightly reduced fuel economy; because the module sits low in the front fascia, wiring and connector damage from road debris, water, or minor collisions is the leading cause.

  • Damaged or corroded wiring/connector at the grille shutter module from road splash and debris
  • Front-end collision or parking impact damage to the shutter assembly harness
  • Failed grille shutter module/actuator
  • Blown fuse or open in the module's power or ground feed
  • Open or short in the data bus circuit branch serving the module

  2. 2.Inspect the front-end harness and connector

    Look for impact damage, melted or chafed wiring near the radiator support, and green corrosion inside the connector from road spray.

  3. 3.Check the bus circuits to the module

    Verify continuity of the CAN/LIN circuit from the module connector back to the network per the wiring diagram, and check for shorts to ground or power.

  4. 4.Command the shutters with a scan tool

    If communication returns after reconnecting, actuate the shutters open and closed and watch for smooth, complete travel without binding from debris or ice.

  5. 5.Replace the module/actuator if it stays silent

    With confirmed good power, ground, and bus wiring at the connector, a module that still does not respond has failed internally.
