I drive maybe 2000 miles a year. How often should I change my oil? Is there any harm in letting it sit in the engine for a long time? Even if it’s not driven much?

The first suggestion would be to see if there is a manufactures recommendation. If there isn’t any information from the manufacture available, it would be suggest to change the oil every 6 to 12 months. If you typically drive very short trips, the frequency should be closer to the 6 month mark. This is because moisture drawn into the vehicles crankcase can mix with sulfur (a byproduct of combustion) and form an acidic environment. This can result in reduced lubricity of the oil and increase wear.
