what happens if you over tighten your drain plug?

The best case scenario is it takes a little more effort to remove the drain plug. The worst case scenario, you damage the threads. This risk is even higher if you have an aluminum oil pan. Damaging the threads means extra work and extra costs to fix the damage.

• Don’t use impact wrenches or impact drivers to tighten drain plugs…even if you have seen this at your local quick lube.
• Don’t use oversized wrenches or ratchets as it makes it easier to overtighten.
• If you don’t want to take any chances, use a torque wrench and set it to the manufactures torque spec.
