Why would I need to replace my AC Receiver/Drier?

The Receiver/Drier in your vehicle typically lasts over a decade. Over time moisture, pressure differences and vibration will cause wear to the accumulator, eventually resulting in failure. The introduction of contaminates from the servicing of the AC system or replacing of other AC components will shorten its life. Defects during the manufacturing process could also cause earlier failure.

How do I know I need an AC Receiver/Drier Replacement?

The most common symptoms you will experience when your accumulator fails are:

  • Rattling noises when the AC is on
  • A moldy smell
  • Refrigerant leaks
  • AC isn’t as cold as should be
  • Cloudy sight glass.

What is the AC Accumulator and what does it do?

The Receiver/Drier is responsible to control the flow of refrigerant through your vehicles AC system. In addition it remove unwanted moisture and debris, and ensure that internal components are protected from corrosion and damage. It does this by utilizing a desiccant material. This desiccant removes moisture which would lead to corrosion and damage to other AC components.

The Receiver/Drier is also responsible for preventing liquid refrigerant from being returned to the compressor. It accomplishes this by allowing refrigerant to accumulate, in such a way that liquid refrigerant is converted back to a gas via boiling and evaporation. This is important as liquid refrigerant introduced to the compressor, would result in result in damage.

How much will it cost?

The typical cost for the testing and replacement of an AC Receiver/Drier is between $130-$440 for parts and labor. The cost depends on your specific make, model and year.  This price range is averaged across all passenger vehicles. The actual cost depends on your specific make, model and year. Depending on your specific vehicle, this cost may be lower or higher. This cost estimate is for the specific repair listed and doesn’t include additional, related items that may require repair.
