A steering gear is used on vehicles without a rack and pinion, typically trucks, SUVs, heavy trucks and equipment. The steering gear is made up of a housing containing a hydraulic powered recirculating ball gear; at one end is an input shaft and at the other is the output shaft. The input shaft, is connected via a steering shaft and ultimate the steering wheel. The output shaft is attached to the pitman arm. When steering input is applied by the steering wheel, it is translated to output movement by the output shaft. The hydraulic force, from the power steering pump generates the mechanically advantage that makes turning the vehicle easier.
