Windshield Wiper System

Windshield Wiper System

Your vehicles windshield wiper system is crucial to your ability to see in during rain and snow. It also helps with removing dust, and road spray from your windshield. Lets look at what the windshield wiper system is, how it works and some common problems you may experience.

Windshield Wiper System components

The typical windshield wiper system is made up of around 10 to 12 components each play a role in allowing you to see clearly.

Windshield Wiper Blade & Wiper Blade Assembly

The windshield wiper blade is technically the rubber squeegee that is responsible for removing rain, snow, road spray, etc. from the windshield. Most drivers are familiar with it in the wiper blade assembly. They come in several different verities, but all have the same major parts.

A frame, a rubber squeegee blade, and a connector. The frame provides a rigid structure for the rubber blade to ride in and provides the needed stability for the blade to clear the windshield. The frame?s connector is used to attach the assembly to the wiper arm.

Windshield Wiper Blade Arm

wiper arm

The wiper blade arm attaches to the wiper blade assembly and provides the required downward force the wiper blade to clear the window. The wiper blade arm is attached to the wiper transmission, which provides the back-and-forth movement of the windshield wipers.

Windshield Wiper Motor

wiper motor

The windshield wiper motor is a standard electric motor. Its speed and frequency of movement can be adjust by the Windshield Wiper Switch. The wiper motors output shaft spins and needs to be changed into a linear, or back-and-forth movement. This done by the Wiper Transmission.

Windshield Transmission

wiper transmission

The wiper transmission, sometimes called the wiper linkage, is the component which allows for the wiper blades to move. It converts the rotation force of the windshield wiper motor in a reciprocating movement.

Windshield Wiper Nozzle Jets

wiper nozzle jets

Windshield Wiper Nozzle, Jets or Nozzle Jets allow for spraying of windshield wash fluid on the windshield. They consist of small nozzle which creates a high velocity spray when windshield wash fluid is forced through them by the windshield washer pump.

Windshield Washer Fluid Pump

windshield washer fluid pump

The windshield washer pump is designed to pump windshield washer fluid from the windshield washer fluid reservoir to the windshield wiper nozzle jets. The washer fluid pump is activated by the drive, using the windshield wiper switch.

Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir

washer reservoir

The windshield washer fluid reservoir holds your vehicles windshield washer fluid. It s a large plastic container, typically located under your vehicles hood. The fluid reservoir usually has a sensor in it, which alerts the drive when the fluid in reservoir is low.

Windshield Wiper Switch

The windshield wiper switch is what allows the driver to input the speed and/or frequency of the wiper blades. It also allows for the driver to spray windshield washer fluid onto the windshield when needed.

” My cars wiper nozzles aren’t spraying”

Start with the basics. Does your washer fluid reservoir have fluid in it? If it does, try to spray the windshield with the vehicle in the on position but not running. You should be able to hear the washer pump kick on. If you don’t hear anything then it is an issue with: a fuse for the pump, the pump it self or switch.

” Only one wiper blade is moving on my car”

Typically this is caused by either a lose nut on the wiper arm, which can be check by removing the cap covering the nut, on the wiper arm. The other common cause is a stripped out wiper arm, which would require replacing.

My cars wiper nozzles spray in the wrong spot

If your windshield wiper nozzle jets aren’t spraying where you want, you can usually adjust them with a pick or paperclip.

My fiance & I were having trouble finding someone to repair our car, but Fixitforus came in CLUTCH! They were able to come to our house since our car wasn't drivable. They really know what they're doing! I was expecting to pay anywhere between 400-500 due to quotes from other shops, but they were so reasonably priced and I ended up paying around $245! Highly recommend!
