Clicking on turns or leaking grease? Restore smooth power to your drive wheels.

CV axles deliver your engine's power to the drive wheels. When one starts to fail you'll often hear popping or clicking on turns and acceleration, or notice leaking grease. Final cost depends on your vehicle. You'll receive a written estimate before any work begins.

Typical service procedure

What's generally involved to restore smooth, reliable driveline power:

  1. Inspection of the CV axle, boots and joints
  2. Diagnosis to confirm which axle has failed
  3. Removal of the worn or damaged CV axle
  4. Replacement with an OE-quality axle assembly
  5. Boot & grease check on the new unit for proper sealing
  6. Hub & bearing inspection while the axle is out
  7. Torque the axle nut and fasteners to specification
  8. Test drive to confirm no clicking, popping or vibration
  9. Documentation of parts and work performed

What is a CV axle & what does it do?

The CV (constant-velocity) axle is designed to deliver your vehicle's power to the drive wheels. They're primarily used on front-wheel-drive cars but can also be found on rear-wheel-drive vehicles. The constant-velocity joints at each end let the axle transmit power smoothly even as the wheels steer and the suspension moves.

  • Location: connects the transmission/differential to the wheel hub at each drive wheel.
  • Joints: inner and outer CV joints allow power transfer through a range of angles.
  • Boots: rubber boots hold grease in and keep dirt and water out of the joints.
  • Failure: a torn boot lets grease escape and contaminants in, leading to joint wear and failure.

Signs you need a CV axle replacement

  • Popping or clicking during acceleration
  • Popping or clicking when making a turn
  • Leaking grease — often flung around the inside of the wheel or under the vehicle
  • A physically separated or visibly damaged axle
  • Vibration that worsens with speed
