Typical cost

Cost varies with the make and model of the vehicle, the type of alternator, labor rates and local market. A general breakdown:

  • Alternator (parts): ~$100–$900+; luxury or imported vehicles run higher
  • Labor: $125–$300, depending on how difficult the alternator is to access
  • Replacement total (parts + labor): typically $225–$1,200
  • Repair (brushes, bearings, etc.): ~$50–$350 when the alternator can be rebuilt rather than replaced

Final cost depends on your vehicle. You'll receive a written estimate before any work begins.

Typical service procedure

What's generally involved to diagnose and restore your charging system:

  1. Visual inspection of the alternator and drive belt for damage, corrosion, loose connections or wear
  2. Battery voltage test — confirm the battery reads ~12.6V with the engine off
  3. Charging-system voltage test — a healthy alternator produces ~13.8–14.8V at the terminals with the engine running
  4. Load test — run lights, A/C and radio to confirm voltage holds under load
  5. Output test — measure current output against the manufacturer's spec
  6. Diode test — check the AC-to-DC diodes for faults that cause battery drain
  7. Noise test — listen for grinding or whining that points to bearing failure
  8. Repair or replacement of the alternator as needed, then re-test

What is an alternator & what does it do?

The alternator is responsible for generating electricity to power your vehicle's electrical systems and to charge the battery while the engine is running. It converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction.

  • Worn bearings: let the rotor spin smoothly; as they wear they cause friction, noise and eventual failure.
  • Faulty voltage regulator: controls output voltage — when it fails the alternator over- or under-charges.
  • Damaged diodes: convert AC to DC; failed diodes stop the battery from charging properly.
  • Worn brushes / slipping belt: reduce or interrupt power generation.
  • Overheating, corrosion or excessive electrical load: all shorten alternator life.

Signs your alternator needs attention

  • Dimming or flickering headlights and interior lights
  • Battery warning light on the dashboard
  • Dead battery or frequent jump-starts
  • Strange noises — grinding or whining from worn bearings
  • Electrical glitches in power windows, seats or the radio
  • Engine stalling when the charging system can't keep up
  • Burning rubber or electrical smell
  • Voltage irregularities — readings outside ~13.5–14.5V
