Typical cost

Cost varies with the number of cylinders, the type of spark plugs your engine requires, and how accessible they are. A general breakdown:

  • Copper plugs: ~$4–$12 each
  • Platinum plugs: ~$8–$20 each
  • Iridium / performance plugs: ~$15–$30+ each
  • Labor: typically $40–$150 depending on engine access
  • Complete replacement (parts + labor): usually $100–$250 for most 4- and 6-cylinder engines; harder-to-reach plugs or coil-on-plug systems can be higher

Final cost depends on your vehicle. You'll receive a written estimate before any work begins.

Typical service procedure

What's generally involved to restore clean, reliable ignition:

  1. Inspection of the existing plugs, coils and wires
  2. Removal of the old spark plugs
  3. Gap check and installation of new, correctly-gapped plugs
  4. Coil & boot inspection for cracks or corrosion
  5. Torque each plug to specification
  6. Anti-seize / dielectric grease applied where appropriate
  7. Test run to confirm a smooth idle and no misfires
  8. Scan for stored ignition trouble codes
  9. Documentation of parts and work performed

What are spark plugs & what do they do?

A spark plug delivers the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside each cylinder of a gasoline engine. Without a strong, well-timed spark, the engine can't run smoothly or efficiently.

  • Location: threaded into the cylinder head, one per cylinder, with the electrode tip reaching into the combustion chamber.
  • Material: the center electrode may be copper, platinum or iridium — premium metals last longer and resist wear.
  • Function: high-voltage current from the ignition coil jumps the plug gap, igniting the compressed fuel mixture.
  • Wear: the electrode gap widens and the tip fouls over time, weakening the spark.
  • Interval: many plugs last 30,000–100,000 miles depending on type — check your owner's manual.

Signs your spark plugs need replacing

  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Rough idle or engine shaking
  • Engine misfires or hesitation under acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Loss of power or sluggish response
  • Check-engine light with misfire codes
  • Rattling or knocking from inefficient combustion
