Typical cost
Diagnostic services are performed to find the cause of an issue. Depending on the system involved, complexity varies. When performing diagnostics we estimate the time it will take and present that, along with a price, before any work begins.
- Diagnostic fee: based on the estimated time to locate the leak
- Waived with repair: the diagnostic cost is not charged if you proceed with the repair
- If declined: the cost of the diagnostic service is still due
- Repair cost: depends on the source — a hose, gasket, seal or fitting — and is quoted separately
Final cost depends on your vehicle. You'll receive a written estimate before any work begins.
Typical service procedure
What's generally involved to find and fix a fluid leak:
- Identify the fluid by color, smell and location of the drip
- Visual inspection of the engine bay, undercarriage and components
- Pressure test or dye trace where needed to confirm the source
- Determine the failed gasket, seal, hose, line or fitting
- Repair or replace the failed component with OE-quality parts
- Refill & top off the affected fluid to specification
- Re-check to confirm the leak is resolved
- Documentation of findings and work performed
What causes leaking fluids?
Your vehicle relies on several fluids to run safely. A leak usually means a worn gasket, cracked hose, failed seal or loose fitting. Identifying the fluid is the first step in pinpointing the problem.
- Engine oil: amber to dark brown; from valve-cover, oil-pan or seal leaks.
- Coolant: green, orange or pink and sweet-smelling; from hoses, the radiator or water pump.
- Transmission fluid: red to brown; from pan gaskets, seals or cooler lines.
- Brake fluid: clear to amber and slick; a safety concern that should be addressed immediately.
- Power-steering fluid: red or amber; from the pump, hoses or rack.
Signs you have a fluid leak
- Puddles or spots where you park
- Low fluid levels that keep dropping
- Burning smell from fluid hitting hot engine parts
- Overheating or a rising temperature gauge
- Warning lights for oil pressure, coolant or brakes
- Poor performance — slipping shifts, a soft brake pedal or hard steering
