Outer Shell
Remove any debris or old residue from the mating surface. Lightly lubricate the outer diameter before tapping the new shell into place with an appropriate seal driver. Verify it seats flush to prevent leaks or misalignment.
Inner Sealing Lip
Examine the lip for cuts or wear marks. Apply a thin layer of lubricant on the lip to reduce friction during reassembly. Replace the seal if the lip is hardened, split, or no longer maintains a proper seal.
Garter Spring
Inspect the spring for damage or distortion. Ensure it rests snugly around the inner lip to sustain even sealing pressure. If the spring is stretched or broken, install a new pinion seal assembly.
Dust Lip (Secondary Seal)
Clean any built-up dirt or grease from the dust lip area. Confirm the lip’s integrity and replace if it’s torn or brittle. Ensure the surrounding surfaces are free of contaminants to keep out debris.
Rubber Coating
Check for any peeling or cracking along the rubber coating. The coating helps form a tight seal around the pinion’s outer circumference. Use a compatible lubricant when installing to avoid misalignment or tearing.
What is a Pinion Seal and what does it do

No content available for this section.
Outer Shell
Common signs of failure: Visible dents or warping, corrosion or rust, and an improper fit in the differential housing. Noticeable oil seepage around the outer perimeter suggests it may no longer form a proper seal.
Rubber Sealing Lip
Common signs of failure: Cracks or splits in the rubber, hardening or brittleness, and noticeable leakage at the lip’s contact point. Excessive wear or any visible damage is a strong indication that replacement is needed.
Garter Spring
Common signs of failure: Loss of tension, breakage, or rust on the spring. If the spring is not holding the sealing lip snugly, expect oil leakage around the pinion area.
Dust Lip
Common signs of failure: Tears, looseness, or dryness leading to contamination and dirt intrusion. Debris buildup around the seal or in the surrounding area suggests that the dust lip is not functioning effectively.
