Fuel Water Separator Repair Procedures

Spin-On Type Separator

Required Tools:Filter wrench, clean rags, new filter element

  1. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
  2. Locate the fuel water separator (typically near the engine)
  3. Place a drain pan underneath to catch any fuel
  4. Drain water and contaminants using the drain valve
  5. Using the filter wrench, remove the old filter
  6. Clean the mounting base with a clean rag
  7. Lubricate the new filter gasket with clean fuel
  8. Install new filter hand-tight plus 1/4 turn
  9. Prime the fuel system according to manufacturer specifications
  10. Start engine and check for leaks

Bowl-Type Separator

Required Tools:Wrench set, screwdriver, clean rags, new filter element and seals

  1. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
  2. Drain the bowl using the drain valve
  3. Remove the retaining bolt/ring holding the bowl
  4. Carefully lower the bowl and remove the filter element
  5. Clean the bowl thoroughly with approved cleaner
  6. Replace all O-rings and seals
  7. Install new filter element
  8. Reinstall bowl and tighten retaining hardware
  9. Prime the system
  10. Check for leaks during operation

Cartridge-Style Separator

Required Tools:Socket set, clean rags, new cartridge, new seals

  1. Shut down engine and relieve fuel system pressure
  2. Remove the separator housing cover
  3. Extract the old cartridge element
  4. Clean the housing interior
  5. Replace all seals and O-rings
  6. Insert new cartridge element
  7. Reinstall housing cover to specified torque
  8. Prime the fuel system
