Signs and Symptoms of Failing Coil Springs
Signs of Coil Spring Failure & Maintenance Guide
Signs of Failure:
Vehicle Sagging or Uneven Height
If one corner of your vehicle appears lower than others, this is often the first visible sign of a failing coil spring. The car may lean to one side when parked on a level surface.
Unusual Noises
Clunking, knocking, or creaking sounds when driving over bumps or during turning can indicate worn or broken coil springs.
Bouncy Ride
Excessive bouncing after hitting bumps or dips in the road suggests the springs are losing their tension and ability to properly support the vehicle.
Visible Damage or Corrosion
Rust, cracks, or breaks in the spring coils are serious issues that require immediate attention. This is more common in areas with heavy road salt use.
Typical Service Schedule:
Regular Inspection
Coil springs should be visually inspected during routine maintenance, typically every 12,000 miles or annually.
Replacement Intervals
While there's no set replacement schedule, coil springs typically last 8-10 years under normal driving conditions. However, this can vary based on:
- Driving conditions (rough roads, frequent heavy loads)
- Climate (especially in areas with road salt use)
- Vehicle type and usage
Preventative Maintenance
To extend coil spring life:
- Regular undercarriage washing to prevent rust
- Avoid overloading the vehicle
- Address any alignment issues promptly
Note: It's recommended to replace coil springs in pairs (both front or both rear) to maintain even vehicle handling and stability.
