How do I know I need a Parking Brake Cable Replacement?

Parking brakes, sometimes called emergency brakes, and designed to be engaged when a vehicle is park.  Typically the parking brake is engaged when the vehicle is unoccupied.

When these fail you can experience several things:

  • Parking brake not engaging
  • Parking brake handle or pedal moves too easily
  • Cable hanging under vehicle
  • Parking brake not disengaging

What is a parking brake cable and what does it do?

A parking brake is a steel cable that is used to engage the parking brakes on a vehicle, with hydraulic brakes. The parking brake is used to keep a vehicle from rolling in the event it is popped out of gear (manual transmission) or the parking pawl fails (automatic transmission)

The parking brake cable runs from the parking brake lever or pedal inside the vehicle to the parking brake. When the parking brake lever or pedal is engaged, it pulls on the cable, which in turn, applies pressure to the parking brakes. Depending on your vehicles set up this pressure activates the rear brake shoes or calipers and causes them to clamp down on the brake drums or rotors, to help prevent the vehicle from moving

The cable is typically routed through a series of pulleys and guides to ensure that it has a smooth, direct path to the parking brakes. It is also designed with a certain amount of tension to prevent it from becoming slack or loose, which could compromise the effectiveness of the parking brake.

How much will it cost?

The typical cost for the testing and replacement is between $130-$330 for parts and labor. This price range is averaged across all passenger vehicles. The actual cost depends on your specific make, model and year. Depending on your specific vehicle, this cost may be lower or higher. This cost estimate is for the specific repair listed and doesn’t include additional, related items that may require repair.

What is included:

  • Diagnosis of defective part
