The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve is a designed to allow the ventilation of gases produced in the crankcase of the engine. The PCV Valve is a component of your vehicle’s emissions-control system. It helps to reduce harmful emissions by feeding the crankcase gases back into the vehicles intake system, where they can be reburned.
A PCV valve typically consists of a tube made of steel or plastic and a one way check valve. The PCV valve will connected to both the crankcase of the engine and to the intake manifold.
The PCV valve can fail for a variety of reasons—it could become clogged with dirt and debris, or it could develop cracks or holes that allow contaminants into your engine oil. When this happens, your car may start to experience a variety of symptoms:
- A loss in power when accelerating from a stop
- An increase in fuel consumption
- Engine misfires or stalling at idle speed
