The fuel level sending unit is designed to measure the amount of fuel in your tank and relay that information to your fuel gauge. Some vehicles use a separate fuel fuel level sending unit, while others have it built into the fuel pump assembly. The fuel fuel level sending unit does this via a float attached to a metal arm and a variable resistor. As the float change rises or falls with the fuel level, the resistance values of the variable resistor change. The reading from the resistor is relayed to your fuel gauge. Different resistance values will result in different fuel levels being displayed. When a fuel fuel level sending unit fails you will typically experience:
- Fuel gauge reads empty when tank is full
- Fuel gauge stuck reading tank is full
- Fuel gauge fluctuates between full and empty
